RWJF NFS Nancy Hanrahan participated in an expert interview at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) 24th Annual Conference regarding inpatient psychiatric care. Dr. Hanrahan discussed optimal healing environments as well as the focus on her research study involving the reported quality of psychiatric nursing work and the presence of adverse events on inpatient psychiatric units.

Cindy Anderson, Ph.D., R.N., was recently published in the Grand Forks Herald of Grand Forks, North Dakota with her article, "The Importance of Nutrition in Pregnancy for Lifelong Health." In it she explains how the maternal nutritional environment effects not only birth weight, but has long-reaching effects for a child's future health and can be linked to the development of coronary heart disease, type II diabetes and hypertension.

The Ohio State University's Jodi Ford will analyze how neighborhood and school disadvantage correlates to the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in young adults. With help from the College of Nursing and the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University, Ford's research, made possible the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will look at group cohesion, high-risk behavior norms and the presence of adult role models with the goal isolating the social aspects most closely linked to high rates of STIs in young adults.

Dusquesne University's Alison Colbert will establish nurse-led interventions to improve the health of incarcerated women re-entering society thus helping to make their transitions more successful. Partnering with other Dusquesne faculty members, Colbert's research, made possible the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will focus on helping women stay healthy, happy and sober as they re-enter their communities.

University of Washington's Betty Bekemeier will study how health professionals in many settings can work to get evidence to policy-makers before important public health policy decisions are made. With help from University of Washington's School of Public Health and Center for Health Sciences, Bekemeier's research, made possible the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will focus on bridging the gap between academic research and public health services.
