Dusquesne University's Alison Colbert will establish nurse-led interventions to improve the health of incarcerated women re-entering society thus helping to make their transitions more successful. Partnering with other Dusquesne faculty members, Colbert's research, made possible the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will focus on helping women stay healthy, happy and sober as they re-enter their communities.

University of Washington's Betty Bekemeier will study how health professionals in many settings can work to get evidence to policy-makers before important public health policy decisions are made. West Virginia University's Laurie Theeke will consider ways to lessen loneliness in chronically ill older adults living in a rural setting. She will partner with West Virginia's School of Nursing as well the Center on Aging/Community Medicine at West Virginia and her research, made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will focus on diminishing the stress response to loneliness in an effort to improve health behaviors thus lessening some effects of chronic illness.

University of Michigan's Maria Katapodi will develop a family communication and decision-support intervention for women with genetic predispositions for breast and ovarian cancers. In partnership with other nurses and doctors at University of Michigan, Katapodi's research, made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will focus on identifying ways to help BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers share their diagnosis with family and will assist high-risk relatives in making informed decisions about genetic testing.

Montana State University's Laura Larsson will examine how to reduce radon exposure in low-income populations as a means of lung cancer prevention. Partnering with Montana State's College of Nursing and Department of Veterinary Molecular Biology/Molecular Biosciences Program, her research, made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will focus on offering reduced-price radon test kits for low-income housing and community education via digital bulletin boards placed in government program waiting rooms.

Duke University's Robin Knobel will consider physiological processes in babies born at less than 29 weeks of gestation that can lead to low blood flow and cold temperatures. Partnering with other professors at Duke University, Knobel's research, made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will analyze the risk of gastrointestinal infections, bleeding in the brain and other possibly fatal complications caused by an premature infants inability to generate their own heat or regulate blood flow.

Vanderbilt University's Terrah Foster will focus on a legacy project for pediatric oncology patients aimed to alleviate suffering for those with poor prognoses for survival. With help from the Vanderbilt School of Nursing and the Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Foster's research, made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will look at interventions to help these pediatric patients with communicating their feelings and creating tangible ways to be remembered by their families.

Saint Louis University's Elizabeth Kostas-Polston will study the early detection and treatment of Human Papillomavirus-related cancer of the head and neck. Her research, made possible the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars grant, will identify strategies in detection as well as preventing the development and progression of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers.
