Jill Esquivel, Ph.D., R.N., A.C.N.P.-B.C.

Jill Howie Esquivel is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco and master’s and doctorate from the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Esquivel’s program of research has been inspired by her extensive clinical experience with critical care and cardiology patients as a nurse practitioner. Dr. Esquivel envisions identifying and testing interventions that are culturally appropriate for vulnerable populations with heart failure. Her goal is to establish culturally appropriate interventions to help Latinos and other vulnerable populations learn about and manage their heart failure. Heart failure is an uncomfortable and disabling condition that is increasing in incidence and prevalence and is the leading cause of hospitalization in the United States. She teaches master’s and doctoral level courses that include research methods and diagnosis and treatment courses in the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. Dr. Esquivel advises master’s and doctoral students with their scholarly work such as theses and dissertations. She recently received the American Heart Association Marie Cowan Young Investigator Award and currently serves as Chair of the Membership and Communications Committee for the American Heart Association Cardiovascular Nursing Council.
