Matthew Gallek, Ph.D., R.N.

Dr. Matthew J Gallek is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The goal of his research is to use genetics/genomics to influence nursing care and practice in the management of patients suffering from brain injury. Specifically, he is interested in cerebral vasospasm, which is a devastating complication following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. In addition, he is interested in functional outcomes following subarachnoid hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. Dr. Gallek received his B.S. in psychology from Allegheny College, his B.S.N. from the University of Pittsburgh, and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. During his doctoral studies he was also a pre-doctoral fellow on a T-32 training grant entitled ‘Targeted Research and Academic Training for Nurses in Genomics’ (NIH/NINR T32 NR009759). In addition, Dr. Gallek was a National Institutes of Health/NINR Summer Genetics Institute Fellow in 2008. Since arriving at the University of Arizona, Dr. Gallek has developed a doctoral level genetics/genomics course that he now teaches. He also reviews for professional journals and has had 7 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 3 invited manuscripts published on topics related to genetics/genomics and brain injury. Currently he is a Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN) and belongs to numerous nursing and interdisciplinary professional organizations.
