  2. I was a full time faculty member in a school of nursing for more than two years prior to completing a research doctorate. I have returned to a tenure-track faculty position in the same school of nursing. Would I be eligible for nomination?

  1. Who is eligible to receive a grant under this program?

    An applicant must be a registered nurse with a research doctorate in nursing or a related discipline in a junior faculty position at an accredited school of nursing and in that position for at least two and no more than five years. A DNP is not considered to be a research doctorate. An applicant must be nominated by the Dean of the school of nursing. Please see the program's Call for Proposals for complete eligibility and selection criteria.

  2. I was a full time faculty member in a school of nursing for more than two years prior to completing a research doctorate. I have returned to a tenure-track faculty position in the same school of nursing. Would I be eligible for nomination?
    Yes, you are eligible if you are currently in a full time junior faculty position (after receiving the research doctorate) and have been in that position for at least two and no more than five years. Junior faculty are those who are at the instructor or assistant professor level.

  3. I have been a full time faculty member at multiple institutions. Does the two year minimum and five year maximum apply to my total experience or my current institution?
    Yes, the two year minimum and five year maximum applies to your total experience in a tenure-track faculty position post research doctorate at any baccalaureate nursing program.

  4. My "tenure clock" has been temporarily stopped. Am I eligible?
    Yes, you are eligible as long as you have been and will be in a tenure eligible position. Your Dean should speak to the specifics of your position in her/his letter.

  5. I received my doctoral degree more than 10 years after receiving my initial nursing degree. Am I eligible?
    Yes, you are eligible. In fact, we expect that many of our applicants to have obtained their doctoral degree more than ten years later, given the nature of nursing education.

  6. What percentage of time in research is needed to apply for the program?
    There is no set percent of time that the applicant should be engaged in research at the time of their application. If awarded a NFS award, the scholar is expected to spend 60% FTE on Nurse Faculty Scholar activities, including their research project.

  7. I am at a school of nursing of a regional campus of a state university, is my school eligible for a separate RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar?
    If your school of nursing is separately accredited with appropriate research and nursing mentorship on campus, then your school would be eligible.

  8. I am in a DNP program. Will I be eligible for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar Program?
    No, you will not be eligible without a PhD or other research doctorate.  The DNP was not designed to be a research degree and is not considered to be a research doctorate.

  9. Can I be nominated to this program even if I am already receiving support from a research fellowship/traineeship?
    No, candidates must not be receiving support from other research fellowships or traineeships at the time they begin the program. Because they already have demonstrated research expertise, former or current principal investigators on an NIH R01 research project or the equivalent are not eligible to apply.

  10. My institution is a diploma school of nursing. Am I eligible to apply?
    No, you are not eligible. You must be working at a fully accredited, US-based, accredited school of nursing.

  11. We have an active Nurse Faculty Scholar at our institution. Are we eligible to nominate a candidate for the current CFP?
    Yes, you are eligible.   A school of nursing can nominate one candidate annually, but may have no more than two active scholars in the program at any one time.

  12. What if my university does not award tenure?
    If your university does not award tenure then you need to be in an academic position where research and scholarship is expected and supported by the university.

  13. Am I eligible to apply to Nurse Faculty Scholars if I have already applied to another, comparable faculty fellowship programs such as the American Heart Association Early Career Investigator Awards, or American Cancer Society Mentored Research Scholar Grant?
    Yes, you are eligible to apply for the RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholars program. It is always a good idea to apply for more than one award at the same time -- the worst that can happen is you get both! If you are offered both an NFS award and simultaneous career development award, the RWJF NFS National Program Office will help you think through options to determine whether you can hold both at the same time (i.e. consideration that the total amount of time funded does not exceed 100%) and strategies for making it work (i.e. delaying acceptance of the non-NFS grant for 1-2 years). Ideally, you should not be funded more than 90% by any combination of the RWJF NFS and other grants because it is essential that you have availability to continue to teach

  14. If one of the expectations of scholars is that they eventually obtain the status of full professor, does that mean that age will be a consideration for a candidate?
    No, age is not part of selection criteria. However, candidates should show evidence of the potential for, and strong commitment to a full career as an academic nurse leader, with the capacity to achieve rank of full professor. We want candidates to plan to be actively involved in academic research for a period of time that is long enough to achieve full professor.
